Serious Test Business

It’s the Test Cricket season at the moment. With 3 test series and The Ashes started yesterday, looks like we have serious stuff to witness.

India vs New Zealand – Retaining #1 position
Before the start of the battle it was considered to be a series of dominance and survival. Dominance from the Indians as they were high after recent series win against Aussies and survival for Kiwis as they had embarrassing tour of Bangladesh. But as it says Cricket is unpredictable game. With the return of Brendon Mccullum as specialist batsmen and promising character of McIntosh and new players Kiwis had different plans for India tour. Though first test in Ahmedabad went into a draw with Harbhajan Singh showing his batting skill on final day and scoring his maiden test century, the match was mostly controlled by the Kiwis. McIntosh scored his debut test century while Chris Martin displayed wonderful spell in India’s second innings taking first 4 wickets for just 10 runs and finishing 5-15. This was an alarm bell for the Indians not to be complacent.
Second test in Hyderabad had almost same story with Kiwis again showing their determination while batting first and scoring 350. Indians started of well with opening partnership of 160 runs with Sehwag missing his ton by 4 runs and some relief for Gautam Gambhir to be back in action after last 8 innings failure. Though the middle order collapsed, thanks to Harbhajan Singh who bailed out India by with his second test century and importantly getting a lead of more than 100 runs for his team. But the Kiwis stood still and Mccullum smashed brilliant double century with shots all over the ground and tearing Indian bowling attack apart.
Third and final test in Nagpur proved why India is #1 Test side in the world. Right from day 1 Indians dominated the match and finished off on 4th day second session to win series 1-0. Batting first The kiwis lost half of their side for 80 odd runs with Indian pace duo Sreesanth & Ishant bowling good line and length. The kiwis were  restricted to 193 in 1st inning on day 2 and were  outclassed by Indian batting line up who scored massive 576-8 (dec) taking healthy lead of 373 at the close of third day.The Kiwis were bowled out for 198 in second innings and lost the match by innings and 198 runs. The main highlight of the match was that the  Indian bowlers got  back in action and brilliant 191 runs by “The Wall” Rahul Dravid in first inning.
ODI series between two countries will start from 28th November’10 in Guwahati with senior players – Sachin, Dhoni, Sehwag, Zaheer & Harbhajan rested. Gautam Gambhir will lead the side with Riddhiman Saha as wicket keeper and return of Yuvraj Singh & Yusuf Pathan in middle order.

South Africa vs Pakistan
The other test series between South Africa and Pakistan in Abu Dhabi ended 0-0 with both test match draw. It seems problems and controversy will never go away from Pakistan Cricket with players involved in match fixing probe and the team playing home away from home series (Dubai & Abu Dhabi destination) to finish off their Calender schedule. The series saw some great performance by Kallis and Amla fro SA side while Younis Khan and Misbah holding the battle and ensuring safe draw from Pakistan side.
Sri Lanka vs West Indies
West Indies on the other hand is touring Sri Lanka with rain affected 2 test ended in draw. The main highlight of 1st match was 333 runs by Chris Gayle displaying strokes all over the ground. The second test in Colombo has 3 days till now with rain taking away most of the day’s play and some batting practice for skipper Sangakkara hitting century followed by Samarweera scoring half century.

The Ashes
There’s so much to say and write about The Ashes.
The Ashes is a Test cricket series played between England and Australia. It is international cricket's most celebrated rivalry and dates back to 1882. It is currently played biennially, alternately in the United Kingdom and Australia. The series is named after a satirical obituary published in a British newspaper, The Sporting Times, in 1882 after a match at The Oval in which Australia beat England on an English ground for the first time. The obituary stated that English cricket had died, and the body will be cremated and the ashes taken to Australia. The English media dubbed the next English tour to Australia (1882–83) as the quest to regain The Ashes. * source Wikipedia & Cricinfo.England currently holds The Ashes, after defeating Australia 2–1 to regain them in the 2009 Ashes series which took place in England and, for the first time, Wales.
The 1st test started yesterday 25th Nov’10 in Gabba, Brisbane. England batting first was restricted to 260 on day 1 with some brilliant performance by Aussie’s pace attack. Peter Siddle became 9th bowler to take hat trick in The Ashes history, claiming wickets of Alistair Cook, Matt Prior and Chris Broad. He finished with total 6 wickets in the innings. Day 2 ended earlier due to bad light having Australia on 220/5, Mike Hussey and Brad Haddin on crease.

Kangaroos Canned, Time For Kiwi Polish.

After sending the Kangaroos hopping back with no victory against their name both in the Test and the ODIs, its now time for their neighbor to get a similar treatment. The Kiwis are not in the best of their forms as they have faced a shameful defeat against Bangladesh. With the current form of the Indian players and the home conditions, its yet another chance for the Indians to send the Kiwi bird flying high in the air and then havesome Kiwi Shine on the Shoes!
We are sure that our boys wont be complacent and Danny's men would fight hard to gain some respect and thats expected. It will be a treat to watch even as some of the key milestones will be arrived at. The one the entire world is looking forward is 50th Test Century for the Little Master Blaster Swash Buckling God- Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar.

A Thorn In The Arm

How many times has the Australian team found themselves at the mercy of the Very Very Special Man from India? Time and again he has been a thorn in their arm. Vangipurapu Venkatasai Laxman, no one can forget his special innings at Eden Gardens in 2001.It’s like rubbing salt to the injury on the Australians as he is the man who always bails out India to a victory and more so against Australia.

The Australians are not worried about Sachin’s wicket, but they are more worried to get Laxman out. In the first innings, Laxman could not come out to bat at his regular batting order due to injury, which cast a doubt whether he would be able to bat in the second innings. In comes Laxman in the second innings and with his great excellence steers India to a 1-0 victory. Great display of efforts and attitude by the youngster Ishant Sharma. Not only did he fire some great bowling spell, but also applied himself well at the crease negotiating the Australian bowlers. His 30 runs and the amount of time that he was on the crease gave a great support to Laxman who was playing in his elegant style.

Zak was at his best taking a fifer in the first innings and 3 in second innings. He is the senior bowler on whom the youngsters like Ishant Sharma can  look up on.He is leathal when it comes to the old ball as he can bowl some good reverse swinging deliveries.

At the end of the day, it says 1-0 in favor of India. 2-0 is some thing that the Indian team are looking forward.

Murali's Test Retirement- End of Spin Era!

800tharan Kandy Man! World’s only player to achieve the feet on the last match of his career. 8 wickets to reach the mile stone and a person like him getting to the exact number in the last match is an interesting achievement in itself. One tends to be under great pressure while playing the last match for the country. There are whole lots of expectations and the emotions running through. Yet Murali held on to his nerves and made it sure that he retired on the 800th winning note.

It’s an end of the spin era with the last legend spinner of the time calling it quits. First it was Warne, then Kumble and now Murali calling it quits. There’s no similarity in the bowling of Murali, Warney and Kumble. The only thing that was similar was the commitment towards the lovely game of cricket.
A little fact about Murali:
Muralitharan was born in the village of Nattarampotha in Kundasale (near Kandy), the eldest of the four sons to Sinnasamy Muttiah and Lakshmi. Muralitharan's father Sinnasamy Muttiah, runs a successful biscuit-making business. Muttiah Muralitharan is the first and only Tamil of Indian Origin to represent Sri Lanka International Cricket
Murali made his test debut on 28th August 1992 against Australia. His bowling action was up in question twice where he was accused of having illegal bowling action. But eventually it was cleared by ICC. The perpetual smile on his face was the quality Murali possessed along with the great character and commitment for cricket
Muralitharan is the highest wicket-taker in both Test cricket and ODI’s with 800 and 515 wickets respectively. There is no one close to Murali at least in the test match who can achieve the feat.
It’s always better to call it quits when you are in prime form. As Sunil Gavaskar famously said, “When you retire, people must ask why and should not ask why not”
It’s about time for Sri Lanka to find a replacement for this legendary offie.
Shams N Wags salutes the little man Muttiah Muralitharan and acknowledge his contribution towards his country and the game of cricket.

Victorious Asians- Men In Blue!

Fifteen years is what it took India to win back the Asia Cup Title. What better time than this time where the belief of the supporters in the team was in complete doldrums after the defeat in Zimbabwe. It was the bowling attack that made the difference. Zaheer bowled peach of a delivery to get rid of the dangerous Sangakkara. The ball kissed the top of the stumps while Sangakkara tried to leave the ball. Dilshan’s wicket was very important as he always makes it big when it matters a lot. Nehra didn’t allow Dilshan to trouble at all by claiming his wicket for a duck. Angelo Matthew followed his team mate by giving his wicket to the same bowler at the same score of duck. Nehra applied brakes at the right time and it was too late for the tail enders to guide the Lankan’s to the shore. His 41/4 wrote the script of Indian victory and he also bagged the Man of the Match award
It was clearly seen that Sri Lanka depends heavily on some of the senior players. The younger lot has to do lots of catching up as the middle order does not seem to provide a solid support.
Dinesh Karthik grabbed the opportunity with both the hands. He replaced injured Viru for this match and scored a brilliant 66 runs at the right time.
This victory is going to be remembered for a long time as the eventful match against Pakistan was also played in the same series.Well played team India. continue the winning streak as we have the big debacle coming up to be played in India- World Cup 2011

Roaring King Harbhajan!

Six of the second last ball reminded us of the 1986 match against Pakistan  Sharjah. It was Javed Miandad then who hit six of the last ball of Chetan Sharma and winning the match and ruining Sharma's career . Harbhajan Singh was super charged when the ball crossed the ropes and with that India registered victory against Pakistan. It was a very exhilarating match like all India Pakistan match. Bhajji has always shown his potential with the bat and is a true match winner. He was roaring like a Lion King and one could not miss the tussle between him and Shoaib Akthar

Pakistan could well have made runs in excess of 280 but credit goes to Indian bowlers who restricted to 267 runs. It came down till the last over where Harbhajan Singh came to the party and hit a six when 3 runs were required of last 2 balls.India has now qualified for the Semis  along with SrilLanka.

In the midst of the Football World Cup, lets revisit the other super game thats Cricket.
The Asia Cup has started featuring Bangladesh, India, Pakistan & Srilanka. India will take on Bangladesh in Dambula today i. e, 15th June 2010. Tamim Iqbal from Bangladesh has shown some super form in Test Match against England in England. A century at Lords has already made him special. Talking about India's form, the series in Zimbabe was a series to forget. The seniors are back in the team, so lets hope for a explosive start. It will be good opportunity for Saurabh Tiwari to show his exploits with the bat for team India. He has already impressed everyone with his performance for Mumbai Indians.
The match to watch out is on Saturday- 19th June 10  as India take on their arch rival Pakistan.

So while everyone is glued to Football World Cup, lets stay tuned to Cricket as well.

Vuvuzela!

Vuvuzela- That’s the name of horn which is making sound at FIFA World Cup 2010.Also known as “lepatata” (Tswana name) it’s a 3 ft 3 inches instrument creating lot of controversy on distracting players on field with noise. FIFA as of now has not yet decided to ban the instrumentbut there’s been lot of eyebrows raised by the players.
Coming on to game updates – last weekend - Argentina started their campaign with 1-0 win over Nigeria and Korea beat Greece 2-0 in Group B. England one of the strong contenders this time started off well with captain Gerrard leading from the front strikes early for his side, but soon US team counter attacked and it was a suicide goal from English Goal-keeper slipping ball into his own net. The game which could’ve easily gone in England’s favour, ended in a draw England 1 -1 USA. In another match Slovenia managed to beat Algeria 1-0. These were results from Group C.
Group D results saw Ghana beating Serbia 1-0 followed by Germany thrashing Australia 4-0.
Group E kicked off really well with Japan beating Cameroon 1-0 and Dutch team enjoying Danish party, The Netherlands beat Denmark 2-0.

Soccer Mania

With the 19th Edition of the Football World Cup to kick start from 11th June 2010 and 30 days of utter craziness with billions and billions of people following each and every match, its time for ShamsnWags to keep their favorite Red Cherry aside and chase the Golden Ball. It’s an undisputed fact that Football is a game that is played and followed globally.
It’s going to be an exhilarating contest with every team pushing hard to lift the trophy.Right from the famous ‘Hand of God’ by Diego Maradona, to the infamous ‘Head Butt’ in last edition by Zidane, football has seen some super incidence in the ground. Not to forget killing of Andres Escobar from Columbia for hitting a self goal.
Though people still vouch for the teams that have won word cup on numerous occasions like Brazil, Italy, Argentina, the likes of Spain, Portugal & Holland are all set to break this trend
Going back to our child memories, in 1986 when Argentina won the WC, that time for Shams football meant Maradona. Now the time has changed and we are following football very closely which includes team formation, recent form of players.
Let’s have a look at some of the Key Players:
Lionel Messy (termed as Modern Maradona), Carlos Tevez –Argentina
Kaka- Brazil
Cassilla Vila & FernandoTorress – Spain
Cristiano Ronaldo - Portugal
Thierry Henry - France
Wayne Rooney, Steven Gerrard & Frank Lampard - England
Lucas Podolski -Germany.

Didier Drogba -Iveorycost

For Shams the favorites are England & Spain, for Wags its Brazil & England.
Which team do you support? Do write in your feedback.

And The Party Continues...

For Men In Blue it seems that the IPL post match party is not yet over. As seen in the IPL matches, they used to party after the matches got over. It seems that the seriousness has gone for a toss.Let’s start from the top of the order to try and figure out as to what our Blue Brigade is up to.

1) Gautam Gambhir- Has forgotten that he does not represent any Muhalla or Gully of Delhi. Simple basics like  grounding the bat while entering in the crease is hygiene in cricket. For God's sake, some one please remind him that he represents India.
2)     Murali Vijay: Is cricket all about playing on the slow tracks where ball does not bounce much or is it playing only for CSK is not very clear in case of Murali Vijay. He is supposed to be Test opener for India.
3)   Suresh Raina: At least Raina has justified as to why he has been captain for the Tour to Zimbabwe in absence of the seniors. He carried forward from where he had left behind in the IPL.
 4)   MS Dhoni:  All the plans are backfiring. MSD is just concerned about lifting the IPL trophy for CSK. Life is not going beyond that. A dismal performance for the boys under him is not accepted at all.
 5)      Rohit Sharma: Why do people have to show dissent on the field? Can they not learn from Sachin Tendulkar to let the bat do the talking?
      6) Yuvraj Singh: There is an air of attitude in Yuvraj singh. There’s a thin line in between having attitude and having the desired attitude. He is altogether in a different trip. Does he want to be the captain of the Team? If yes then we are sorry, he does not deserve it.
      7)  Yusuf Pathan: This bloke needs to come out of performing only at the state level.  He has to perform at the national level. He has completely forgotten that he has to take pride and perform for Team India. He just can’t come out of the Rajasthan  Royals comfort zone.
8)      Ravindra Jadeja: What is Ravindra Jadeja doing in the T20 World Cup while he was banned for the IPL matches for all wrong reasons ?Suddenly he fills in the slot of allrounder, dropping catches, getting clobbered for sixes. Do we not have a specialist batsmen or bowler in his place?
9)  Harbhajan Singh: He has lost the knack of picking wickets or is it too early to say he has lost his aggression? May be slapping people here and there is the only way he can show the aggression. What has happened to his spin and bounce only he can reply the question.
10) Ashish Nehra:  It’s difficult to digest the fact that Ashish Nehra has been recalled. He could not play for Delhi due to injury concerns, straight away he is being picked for T20 WC.Are we left with no options? A bright smile is on offer on his face whenever he gets clobbered. Wow what a body language to have. Is he trying the Australian way? Does he have the fire power to fight back as Aussie does?
11)      Vinay Kumar: Question mark on why he was not given a chance to play ahead of Ashish Nehra? Atleast he showed better body language on the ground. Although he got hit all over the park, but he was bowling a good line.
The body language of the entire team was bad. It could be clearly seen in the demeanor of the players. IPL has been over hyped and playing for ‘Big Moohlas’ has been the case for some of the players and they have taken cricket for granted.  That’s why time and again it’s said that Test match is the real test of character.

Has IPL Killed T20- World Cup excitement?

After the super exciting round of the matches in the IPL, there were three occasions where the contest was Shams Vs Wags. After some close matches, Shams turned out to be the eventual winner as CKS beat MI in the finals. " We could not gift Sachin the IPL Trophy as his birthday present. Nevertheless Well Played CSK" says Wags.

It may well look like the IPL has killed the excitement levels for the T20 World Cup. The T20 world cup does not seem to have the following as one had for IPL. The venue could be the major reason or may be it could be an over dose of cricket. Moreover the outfields are on the slower side.

The Men in Blue seem to be the favorite and strong both on papers and on field. Suresh Raina has started from where he had ended in the IPL. His blitzkrieg knock of 101 in the match against the Proteas proves that he is made of the steel mettle. He is a live wire in the outfield and it looks as if the ball follows him and he does not like the sight of the ball passing by him. Team India has made its way in the Super 8s and hope this time we win the T20 World Cup.

Sultan Of Cricket- MI King!!!

Time and again Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar has shown his class. Be it for Team India or be it for Mumbai Indians, he has always played a pivotal role for his team. He is a perfect role model.  Even in yesterdays match
( 11th April 10) , he took over from where he had left in the last match and made sure that he steered his side right into the semifinals. Mumbai Indians is the only side who is comfortable in the semis. With yet another half century to his name, he has already shown that he belongs to the top with the Orange cap and he is on the peak of the career.About time to call him the "Sultan of Cricket"
Keep making those half centuries and Keep winning Mumbai Indians.

Scores Leveled

It was Shams Vs Wags yet again yesterday( 6th April 2010) where CSK took on Mumbai Indians at their home ground in Chepauk.
It was an absorbing day at Chepauk and the same was seen in the match . Batting first, CSK made 165, while MI managed only 149 in thier quota of 20 overs.

In the first match, MI defeated CSK easily at Brabourne. So both the teams have a win against each other at their own back yard.

All we have to say is that for Shams and Wags, the scores are leveled, both on the ground and off the ground as well.
Stay tuned for the IPL

Cheers.
Shams n Wags.

Shams Vs Wags!

It’s that time of the year Shams n Wags vie for bragging rights. With Shams backing up the Mongoose bat of Haydos and expecting him to fire all cylinders, Wags has all his loyalty towards the Mumbai Indians.

Its going to be an electrifying match at the Brabourne stadium on Thursday (25th March 2010) where the two quality teams would take on against each other.

For CSK  Haydos is in good nick and stand in captain Raina blazing all guns Parthiv is no mug with the bat and ball. Although Murali and Ashwin are spinning the web, CSK are missing a quality fast bowler. Absence of their star player MS Dhoni is adding salt to the injury.

On the other hand, the Mumbai Indians are on the top of the world with the batting maestro in entirely new zone with scoring loads of runs in all formats of the game.
He is Mumbai Indian’s God- Sachin Tendulkar. He has been well supported by the new comers Aditya Tare, Ambati Rayudu ,Saurabh Tiwari. What does one have to say about Tiwari? He is a left handed Dhoni.  With Zak and Bhajji leading the bowling department as seniors, the team composition looks real good.

So we are all set to see the father of all games- CSK Vs MI. and for us it’s Shams Vs Wags!
